Jones River Watershed Association

The Jones River Watershed Association is a non-profit, member-based organization established to protect, enhance, and restore the natural resources of the watershed though advocacy, protection of sensitive riparian lands, habitat restoration, and infrastructure improvements.

We began our work in 1985 in response to the terrible impacts of water diversions out of the basin. Since that time, we have maintained an increasingly consistant level of effort to educate others and ourselves about this small coastal ecosystem and its relationship to the globally significant Gulf of Maine.

Our twentieth year brought real challenges and real changes. Make no mistake, the river and its ecosystem are in desperate condition. However, because of the small but essential steps taken over the years to conserve land, to study the river, and to address the politics that impact our local environment, we now have a chance to restore the vital natural resources important to all of us.

This past year our most significant accomplishments concluded in agreements with the proponents of the Taunton River Desalination Project that will provide new water to the City of Brockton, and participation in the process that will establish a comprehensive water management plan for that City that will restore continuity between the Jones River and Silver Lake.

We have also advanced our project at Jones River Landing to create an environmental heritage center that will institutionalize long-term stewardship of the natural resources of the river and the bay. With essential help from our most loyal supporters, we were able to meet our mortgage obligations through a successful November 26th fundraiser when over $30,000 was raised for the project.

This year we will concentrate on launching our capital campaign to raise the funds needed for the mortgage on Jones River Landing and implementing a planning strategy that will restore diadromous fish to the Jones River. We look forward to your help and involvement!

Pine duBois honored with ELM Green Star Award

PinesELMaward.JPG We are extremely proud to report that our very own Executive Director, Pine duBois, was honored with the Green Star Award by the Environmental League of Massachusetts. Awards were presented to five individuals who "have provided extraordinary leadership on behalf of the Massachusetts environment", and Pine was in the company of fellow awardees Mayor Thomas Menino, Marion Kane of the Barr Foundation, Rick Mattila of Genzyme Corporation, and Tedd Saunders of the Saunders Hotel Group. This "wonderful gathering of friends of the environment, and the largest environmental event of the year", was held at the LEED certified Boston Children's Museum on June 12, 2008.
