Whales: Why Do We Care and What You Can Do!
June 2008
Thank you to Regina Asmutis-Silvia of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society for her wonderful talk and slide show on whales! Insightful, entertaining, and a nice close-up and personal view of our giant neighbors to the East. Remember, eat Massachusetts Lobster with the whale-friendly claw bands (only Massachusetts has outlawed floating lobster trap rope, a culprit in whale entanglement and death); and watch out for whales while boating!
Regina Asmutis-Silvia is the Senior Biologist for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. She has undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry and a graduate degree in biology. She has been active in whale research, conservation and education since 1990. Regina currently sits on the Atlantic Large Whale, Harbor Porpoise, and Atlantic Trawl Gear Take Reduction Teams as well as the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. Regina will discuss the identification of species and individual whales found off the coast of Massachusetts as well as threats they face, conservation management and simple ways everyone can help.
