JRWA is working to protect Silver Lake and to secure a management regime that will ensure protection of this valuable regional asset. Silver Lake is a cold-water lake formed by the last glacier 14,000 years ago. It is the headwater of Jones River, although it has been seriously degraded by use as the primary water supply for Brockton and others. JRWA is hoping to re-establish continuous flow from the Lake to Jones River so that the connection to Cape Cod Bay is restored. To achieve this goal, JRWA has performed several studies on the Lake with various partners. In 2002 we completed work on Silver Lake to evaluate water quality and discharges to the lake under contract with Environmental Science Services. This was funded by the Department of Environmental Management Lake & Pond Program through the town of Kingston. We hope to develop strategies for protecting Silver Lake from adverse development impacts.
The water quality supplemented several earlier studies including a surveys on the freshwater mussels in the lake and the bathymetry of the lake and Forge Pond.
