Last week, four students and their advisers met at the Jones River Landing to discuss their project to provide engineering studies to remove the Elm Street dam in Kingston. While this is not the professional (and expensive) design the town will need to accomplish this work, we think it will provide the foundation for the necessary community discussion. The students chose Elm Street dam as their senior “capstone project.” They will go through all of the physical investigations and necessary work to provide an engineered plan for a restored Jones River at Elm Street.

Over the next year, we will host one or more opportunities for everyone to meet with the students and engage in a public discussion of the merits of the project, as well as flesh-out ideas and concerns. Engineers and a local survey company are donating their time to provide the students with necessary information.
