On Thursday March 2, 2023, beginning at 6:30 PM the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) of Kingston will be holding a Public Hearing as the next step in recommending funding at the Town Meeting on May 6th. JRWA will be presenting a request for funding a ‘blue book’ appraisal as well as a site assessment for a total request of $35,000.
We are proposing that the Town take an interest in evaluating its options to purchase the 60 – acre parcel owned by Roger Correira on Route 106, Wapping Road. This land is immediately adjacent to the Hathaway Preserve and includes the current easement to that land. Purchase of the land will enable protection and restoration continuing another 2000 feet along the mainstem of Jones River. This is a vital area for the fish migration, which can be adversely impacted with pumping from the river and drainage that is polluted with fertilizers, pesticides and the like. Roger wants to sell his property and would like habitat restoration to occur on this land.
JRWA is interested in working with the town and other partners to continue to advance the health of the Jones River ecosystem. Because the Correira land is in Ch 61A, the town will have Right of First Refusal. To act, the Town must have a certified appraisal and a realistic view of any contaminant hazards on the property. We see this as an enormous, once in a lifetime opportunity that we should do everything we can do to accomplish.
This will help our overall goal to restore the natural qualities of this historically important and essential river system. We’d love to have your support and engagement, and coming to the public hearing is one way to help out. The CPC will decide at its March 9th meeting which projects they will recommend. Join us if you can!
The meeting will be in Room 200 at the Kingston Town House on Thursday March 2nd, 6:30-8:30 PM, or join the Zoom Meeting →
